SURVIVOR: BLOOD VS WATER 10/23/13

October 24th, 2013 | 4 Comments | Posted in Survivor 27 - Blood vs Water

Before I get started with today’s recap, I wanted to mention something that I read in an article this week. It has to do with why the Galang tribe may not have warmed up to Candice from the beginning. I’ve been playfully accusing her of maybe being a bitch, and that’s why she was voted off that first day on the beach. Evidently it was for another reason.

In an interview that Candice gave to The Hollywood Reporter (link) about a week ago, she states that at the beginning of the season, she and John weren’t even supposed to be on the show. The show originally cast R.C. (from Survivor: Philippines ). Yes, the girl with the most obnoxious laugh…and ample bosom (!). Apparently she was scheduled to play with her dad, but at the last minute, he was having issues with high blood pressure so they had to cut them from the show and was replaced with Candice and John.

This means that while all the other “teams” were getting to know each other at Ponderosa for 4-5 days prior to the season starting, she and John only had 24 hours to meet the others. So while many “alliances” may have been formed at Ponderosa (perhaps “first impressions” is a better phrase…), Brooke and Chris Atkins hit the beach aligned with no one but themselves. She even touched on the fact that on a “regular season,” she would have had at least 3 days to get to know her tribe and have an opportunity to explain her late arrival; but instead, she got “30 seconds and no explanation,” and so her fate was sealed. So, my apologies to Candice if I implied that she could just be a bitch…

I’m glad we cleared that up!

But then I just finished watching the Survivor After Show with Candice and Parvati, and maybe I’m beating a dead horse here, but one thing that may not endear her to some of the “less wealthy” fans of the show is saying that she had to give up “all her vacation time for a year” to do the show. Sorry but my heart doesn’t bleed for you on that one, Brooke. You didn’t “give up” your vacation time. You traded it for a chance to win a million dollars and increase your Q rating. Maybe you should think about it that way. And maybe I wasn’t so far off on my earlier theory…

Another thing I read this week is when Jeff Probst mentioned in another interview with The Hollywood Reporter (link) that this season there’s going to be a significant event “that has only occurred once in 27 seasons.” Now that’s the kind of tease I’m looking for! Give me something to think about that brings me back each week. And while I’m not a fan of spoiling anything on Survivor, I’m now wondering if it may be one of these things:

· A Susan Hawk-like “snakes and rats” evil rant at final Tribal
· A dreaded “purple rock” scenario
· An Erik “give up immunity and get voted out” scenario

Whatever happens, I’m sure America will keep watching each week. And something is telling me the ratings will increase as the season progresses. There’s just so much drama each week so you know the s**t’s going to continue to hit the fan…

On to the episode!

  1. Hey! I really enjoy your recaps. I’ve been reading all season and wanted to comment before, but I couldn’t remember my password.

Anyway, I was wondering what the “purple rock” scenario was? It doesn’t ring a bell for me!?

I’m glad Kat was voted out. I don’t blame the women for questioning her loyalty. She seems like a bit of a loose cannon.

Didn’t she claim to have heart problems and had been through open heart surgeries and stuff? Any truth to that?

  2. As soon as I heard Kat say that, I immediately missed writing this blog! I enjoy your recaps. Glad someone got to take over for me and is handling things well. The thing that makes it so funny is that Kat was SO serious when she said it, too. She’s probably thinking that since Hayden won Big Brother, he’s only dating her to get onto Survivor and will only continue the relationship if one of them wins the million, since he most likely spent his $500,000 on new surf boards, hair gel, and a penis enlargement surgery.

  3. Thank you, MAC, for your support and kind words. I could be writing these recaps for you and about a dozen other people, but I’m glad SOMEONE is enjoying them.

The Purple Rock was a lame way of resolving a Tribal Council tiebreaker after a revote. I could expound on it, but I think Survivor Wiki does a better job: http://survivor.wikia.com/wiki/Tiebreaker

    It’s a good place for any Survivor-related questions…

Kat revealed at Tribal Council on Survivor: One World that she had a heart condition that would require her to have another open heart surgery at some point after she was on that season. I got the impression that her life-and-death reality had given her perspective to not hold a grudge against the women who had voted her out.

While I enjoyed the goofy side of Kat on that season, I found her new “strategic” approach didn’t suit her. She’s trying to play the tough girl, but she should just be the surfer chick… As I wrote, if she didn’t say anything to Tina about Monica, she would have been safe.

Scott: Thank you for reading! It’s super important to have your blessing as I inherited this from you. I hope to live up to the standard you set.

And yeah, at the beginning of the season I though Hayden definitely had an advantage by winning another reality show. True, there’s a target on him for that too, but he also knows to keep playing the game 24/7, like on Big Brother. I hope he does well. On a secret scene from next week, you can see he’s given the option to trade places with Kat. I wonder how they handle that, considering how this week’s episode ended.

  4. Ok, now I remember! Thanks for the reply!

Shout out to Scott- I read and enjoyed his recaps, too.

    Y’all have a great weekend!
