Hello everyone, and welcome to Season 27 of Survivor, Blood vs. Water. Bryan Fischer here (just call me “Fish”) recapping the season for you and I am honored and excited to be handling things for you this season. I’ve got to start out by giving a huge “thank you” to Reality Steve for making this possible. I know he’s a huge Survivor fan (even with all the twists this season!) so I’ll do my best to make him proud.
Like many of you, I am a tremendous Survivor fan and have been there every episode since day 1 of Borneo. Something about this show hooked me in more so than others, and having submitted lame audition tape after lame audition tape, I just stuck to watching and studying the show like a drooling fanboy ever since Jeff Probst introduced those crazy Americans on that boat in the South China Sea. We saw bitter Susan, Rudy the SEAL…and Richard Hatch’s pixilated member… Oh how things have changed.
Rather than looking at portly naked men, we now (thankfully) get skinny women with boob jobs and everyone running around in their chones. And while we tune in and claim to want to see everyone “playing” the game, what we really wanna see is how much drama unfolds, how much weight the girls have lost, and wonder why not one guy has brought a pair of scissors along to trim everyone’s nasty beards….
But maybe that’s just me.
I know this season is going to be a little difficult to review. Hell, even Steve says he’s not as interested to follow all the twists. And with Colton on this season, I know that THOUSANDS of viewers have already decided to not record this season on their DVRs. It may become a challenge, but as every season of Survivor has proven, things don’t go as planned, and just when you think you know who’s gonna be safe this week, or who’s gonna align with whom, something happens to twist it around and make you re-evaluate. At least for another week…
So here’s a little primer for those of you who may not be familiar:
SO – Significant Other
RP – Returning Player
IC – Immunity Challenge
TC – Tribal Council
RI – Redemption Island
ITM – In The Moment interview
Now there have been a lot of videos to digest before the season even started. Teases, intro videos, Jeff’s assessment, cast interviews, etc. Typically, most of it means squat… Sure, Jeff thinks Rupert’s wife will be out soon because she doesn’t look like she can cut it, but if the SO’s win on day 1, she ain’t goin’ nowhere…! So let’s back off who’s gonna go home right away and take a moment to review all the teams and see who we’ll be watching this season…
Like Steve, I am an avid fan of Survivor. Another thing I was a fan of was this site’s previous Survivor blogger, Scott (not to mention his Big Brother recaps). I have to say that you didn’t do a bad job, it’s just that I have to get used to not seeing Scott’s recap on this site. He had a great way of mixing a summary of the episode with humor. I did chuckle a bit with your recap, but nothing like I did with his.
Again, I’m not knocking you here, just mentioning how much I (already) miss Scott. Hopefully you can make me forget about him soon…
Hi, thanks for the comment (my only one…!).
Hopefully the second column was a bit better. The first show of the season is always tough to review cuz there’s so much “preface” to the season. Perhaps my columns will get better as I develop my style… I’m trying to do something different with the hyperlinks, but I don’t wanna have it be just a “linky” review. Seriously, I’d be okay if I wrote just a review of the show with some strategy discussed, but inevitably, I’ll wanna say something funny. It’s just tough to find nuggets at 1am in the morning when no one’s doing anything funny… One reality of the “family episode feel” this season has is that there’s less stupidity to rip on, and more emotional moments. I don’t wanna rip people for being human, so that’s what I’m up against. Plus, with half the players being returning ones, they already know the drill and are not apt to making stupid mistakes/plays… Hope you can appreciate that.
And I just want to be clear that I was a fan of Scott’s too. I read ALL his Survivor columns on RealitySteve.com. That’s WHY I wanted to do it. I’m such a fan of the show I just wanted to expand my interaction and try something new. Hopefully I’ll improve a bit and tickle some funny bones.
Thanks for the inspiration. Keep reading…
